History of Cape Coral, FL

Cape Coral first got its start in 1957, thanks to real estate developer brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen from Baltimore, MD. The brothers were flying all across the southwest region of Florida searching for land to develop when they crossed over the Redfish Point peninsula. They recognized the potential the region held and purchased a 103-square-mile piece of land for almost $700,000. The following year, the brothers began planning the city and founded the Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC) to help them develop the area. GALC split the region into individual lots and began selling them at free dinners in hotel banquet rooms they would host for prospective buyers. The approach was so successful that GALC eventually began chartering flights in order to fly buyers out to the property.

Over time, canals, streets, homes, and businesses were all created throughout the area, and Cape Coral was heavily advertised in a way that up-and-coming towns had never seen. Celebrities were even brought on to help promote the area. By 1963, Cape Coral's population had risen to 2,850, and more than 1,000 new buildings had been created or were in the midst of the construction process. Golf courses, medical clinics, shopping centers, and even a yacht club had all been established by this point. Perhaps the most influential project created, however, was the Cape Coral Bridge in 1964, which significantly reduced the travel time to and from Fort Myers. The city was incorporated in 1970.
