All About Clermont, Florida
All About Clermont, Florida
History of Clermont, FL
Clermont, FL, was founded in 1884, and its roots can be found in the orange groves that once covered the region. The citrus industry flourished so much, in fact, that it became the basis for the entire Clermont economy all the way up through the mid-20th century.
One of the largest contributing factors to Clermont's citrus farming was the founding of the Postal Colony Company in 1922 by Edward Denslow. Denslow purchased 1,000 acres of land in Clermont and set about planting citrus groves all over it. He then hired retired postal workers to work the groves, and in time, they came to be owners of the company.
Unfortunately, the citrus-farming ways of Clermont have mostly ceased to be, due in large part to successive seasonal freezes that killed off large sections of the groves during the 1980s. While this may have been the end to much of the citrus, it was far from the end of Clermont. Today, Clermont has become a popular tourist destination due to its bustling retail economy and tourism industry.
