History of Miami, FL

Miami was originally occupied by the Tequesta tribe for 2,000 years before they came into contact with the Europeans. In 1566, explorers arrived in the area and claimed it in the name of Spain, but it was ruled by Spain and Britain in succession up until 1821 when Spain ceded it to the United States and it became part of the Florida Territory. Miami was officially founded in the late 19th century by a local citrus grower named Julia Tuttle and over the next few years, Miami's growth expanded rapidly due to it being one of the only climates that didn’t suffer from the Great Freeze of 1894 to 1895. The area's prosperity continued until the 1930s when the Great Depression slowed the development of the Florida land boom, but it regained its prosperity once again during World War II when it became a base for U.S. defense troops. This growth was furthered once again during the Cuban Revolution in the late 1950s and early 1960s, where it became a safe haven for many former Cuban residents. Since then, the area has boomed and a variety of new businesses and amenities have arrived in the popular area.
