"Aventura" comes from the Spanish word for "adventure," which was a name chosen by developers when they were creating the city. Initially, the city currently called Aventura was a swamp, until it was developed in the 1970s and 1980s by the Oxford Development Company as a high-rise residential area. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1995, and today, more than 37,000 people live here.

This planned suburban city is 17 miles north of Miami and is part of the larger Miami metropolitan area. It's a relatively small city in comparison to some of the larger ones surrounding it, but it's known for its shopping district, which contains the fifth-largest mall in the United States.
