History of Forest Hill, MD, and Harford County
Forest Hill is a community located in Harford County, Maryland. The region was originally inhabited by the Massawomeck and Susquehannock Native Americans, with the first European visitor being John Smith when he traveled up the Chesapeake Bay. In 1652, the Susquehannocks signed a treaty with the English that gave the European settlers control of the region that would eventually become Harford County.
Despite the treaty being signed in 1652, Harford County wasn't officially formed until March 22, 1774. It initially had a population of 13,000 people and was named after Henry Harford, who was the last proprietary governor of Maryland. Exactly one year after its formation, Harford County played host to the signers of the Bush Declaration. This document declared their support for an independent country and helped set the American Revolution in motion.
