About Miami Lakes, FL
About Miami Lakes, FL
History of Miami Lakes, FL
Miami Lakes is one of the youngest towns in all of Miami-Dade County. Its development was started back in 1962 by Sengra, now known as the Graham Companies, on land then owned by Florida state Sen. Ernest Graham.
What is now known as Miami Lakes all stemmed from a single dairy farm owned by the Grahams. When the Graham family decided they wanted to develop the area, they started with a foundational goal of continued growth over many decades. They declared that Miami Lakes would be a 30-year development, though it has now surpassed that, with development continuing on today.
To help realize their vision, the Grahams turned to landscape architect and Harvard School of Architecture Dean Lester Collins. Collins set about creating a master plan for the area and envisioned it with numerous lakes and tree-covered streets that stood in direct contrast to most of the landscape in the surrounding region. Much of Collins's original vision can still be observed on the east side of the town.
Miami Lakes was finally incorporated in 2000 and became the 31st municipality in Miami-Dade County.
