History of Plantation, FL
The city of Plantation, FL, began when a man by the name of Frederick Peters moved to south Florida in 1931. Peters, who was the heir to a shoe business based out of St. Louis, was advised by a doctor to move his family to a warmer climate for his son's health, so that's exactly what he did.
Upon arriving in Florida, Peters started up both a potato and a cattle business. The businesses were a success but ranch owner Stephan Zacher advised Peters to seek out a better plot of land to raise his cattle on. This advice led Peters to purchase 10,000 acres north of the town of Davie. Peters purchased the land with the intent of creating a farming cooperative and soon hired architect Russell Pancoast to help him develop a city master plan. This led to the creation of separate residential, industrial, and commercial districts.
Peters then turned to Chauncey Clark Jr. to help him develop the area in exchange for land options and drainage of the land to provide access. However, it was ultimately his father, Chauncey Clark Sr., who presented the development plan Peters used. It created one-acre plots of land on which two-bedroom homes were constructed, and two-thirds of the land was left available for gardening and fruit trees. This was done with the idea that residents of Plantation could grow their own produce and sell it at a co-op market.
On April 23, 1953, Plantation was incorporated with a population of only 300 people and a city budget of less than $2,000. The very first city council meeting took place less than a month later in an old feed warehouse, where the first City Hall would later be constructed.
