All About Fabulous Fort Myers, Florida
History of Fort Myers, FL
Though the city of Fort Myers was not officially founded until 1885, the land that would eventually become Fort Myers first saw use as Fort Harvie in 1841 during the Second Seminole War. As the war began coming to a close in the following year, however, Fort Harvie was abandoned. Fort Harvie sporadically saw use over the next couple of decades and was renamed Fort Myers in 1850. The fort played an instrumental role during the Third Seminole War in the 1850s as well as during the Civil War.
It wasn't until the late 1860s that Fort Myers began to establish itself as a cattle and farming community. The community flourished over the next decade, and by the mid-1880s it had developed a commercial center. Fort Myers was eventually incorporated in 1885 and became a part of Lee County in 1887.
