The History of Miami, FL

Miami was founded in the late 19th century by Julia Tuttle, a local citrus grower, who convinced the railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to expand his Florida railroad to Miami. Miami was a great location for building and after the Great Freeze of 1894, it was also the only part of Florida that did not get wiped out by the frost leading it to be a great spot to expand to. In 1896, Miami was incorporated as a city with just over 300 residents. Since then the population has expanded, especially after World War II where it was used as a base for U.S. defense troops, and after the Cuban Revolution when it became a safe haven for many former Cuban residents.
