History of Palmetto Bay

For more than 10,000 years, the Palmetto Bay region has been home to inhabitants of many different cultures. Seminoles, Paleo-Indians, Tequestas, Afro-Bahamians, and Anglo-Americans have all resided in the area at one point or another. Studies of the land have revealed that ancient housing existed all along the Miami Rock Ridge. In fact, discoveries made at the Old Cutler Fossil Site in 1985 are among the most important archaeological findings on the East Coast. Before unearthing the skeletal remains of mammoths, dire wolves, saber-toothed tigers, and, most importantly, humans, most believed that the area had only been inhabited starting 4,000 years ago.

Those who did live in the area 4,000 years ago were the Tequesta tribe. They lived off of the land as roaming tribes of hunters and fishers. Unfortunately, when the Spanish arrived in 1513, the Tequestas had no immunity to the diseases they brought with them, and the Tequestas were all but wiped out before the 1800s.

In 1821, the United States purchased Florida from Spain for $5 million. In 1838, amid the Second Seminole War, the federal government granted a 36-square-mile parcel of land, including what would eventually become Palmetto Bay, to Dr. Henry Perrine to establish an agricultural settlement. However, Perrine was killed in an Indian attack in 1840 while he was away from the land, and it wasn't until 1875 that his son, Henry Jr., would return to reclaim it. But in the family's absence, squatters had taken over the land, establishing their own farms. It would take until 1897 for this ownership dispute to be settled.

Over the next century, the area continued to grow and develop, but it took until 2002 for the village of Palmetto Bay to be officially incorporated as Miami-Dade County's 33rd municipality.
