History of Wellington

Wellington, Florida, was created in the 1950s when Charles Oliver Wellington, a successful accountant from the Northeast, purchased several tracts of land. The land he bought was flood-prone because it bordered the Florida Everglades, but shortly after his purchase, Florida created the Acme Drainage District, which provided drainage and flood control to make the area suitable for agriculture. It drastically transformed the waterlogged tract to create fertile land for growing crops, including strawberries: At one point, Wellington was home to 2,000 acres of strawberries, making it the largest strawberry patch in the world! After Charles Wellington's death in 1959, development on the land began, in part to pay the taxes on his estate. Large-scale residential construction began in the early 1970s, but it wasn't until 1995 that residents would successfully push for the area to become an independent village.

Wellington is a village to the west of West Palm Beach. It's located in Palm Beach County, north of Miami. With more than 65,000 residents, Wellington, Florida, is the most populated village in the state of Florida.
