How to Respond to 7 Common Kids' Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can happen at any time of the day or night, so it’s important to now how to handle them correctly. Keep the following list of common kids dental emergencies and their treatments in a convenient location to help you make the right choices in an urgent situation.
- Treating a Child’s Toothache
First, have the child rinse with warm water. Use dental floss to remove food stuck between teeth. If pain continues, apply a cold compress, and contact your pediatric dentist.
- Foreign Object Between Teeth
If you are unable to remove the object with dental floss, contact your dentist. Never use a sharp tool to remove a foreign object.
- Tongue or Lip Bites
Clean the area with water, and apply a cold compress or wet washcloth firmly to stop bleeding and reduce swelling. Contact your pediatric dentist or pediatrician for advice.
- Handling a Knocked-Out Tooth
Quick action is critical for saving a knocked-out tooth. If the tooth is completely removed, rinse it gently with plain water. Handle it only by its crown. Try to replace the tooth into its socket. If this isn’t possible, place it in a cup of milk, and see your pediatric dentist immediately.

- Preventing Dental Emergencies
To reduce the risk of dental injuries, remove stray toys and other objects that could cause a fall. Don’t allow your child to chew ice, popcorn kernels, or other hard foods. If your child plays sports, make sure he or she uses a mouth guard.
