Why Should I Wear My Retainer?

So, you have finally finished with your orthodontics treatment, but now your orthodontist says you have to wear a retainer? Does it really matter that much?

The answer is a definite “yes.”

The importance of wearing a retainer following removal of braces for kids and adults cannot be stressed enough. Imagine finally getting your braces off after a year or more. If you do not wear your retainer, your teeth can begin shifting again in no time at all. The next thing you know, your perfect smile is gone, and you could be facing even more orthodontics treatment. After working so hard and so long to get that beautiful smile, why wouldn’t you do what you can to keep it?

If your orthodontist fits you with a bonded retainer, you won’t need to worry too much because that is a fixed retainer that always stays in your mouth. However, if you are given a clear or metal retainer, it is up to you to be sure to wear it as often as the orthodontist prescribes.

How a retainer is worn will vary from person to person. Some people will have to wear a retainer all day for a certain period of time, and then maybe only at night. Others will only ever have to wear the retainer at night. Either way, the biggest priority is making sure it is worn as directed.

Just as your teeth shifted into a better position during your orthodontics treatment, teeth will continue to shift afterwards, especially as you grow. Wearing a retainer as directed helps prevent shifting teeth, so that your smile is as beautiful as the day your braces came off.
