History of Elkton, MD
Elkton was founded in 1694 by Swedish fishermen from Fort Casimir. At the time, it was called Head of Elk because it was located at the head of navigation for the Elk River. The town quietly grew over the years and saw action during the Revolutionary War, starting when Gen. William Howe landed on the Elk River in August 1777 and marched north. In 1781, the Marquis de Lafayette visited with his troops to attempt to capture Benedict Arnold. And George Washington stopped here while en route to Yorktown.
In the early 20th century, Elkton's claim to fame was that it was a popular place for people from nearby states with restrictive marriage laws to get married. Since it was the closest county seat in Maryland to Philadelphia, New York, and New England, it became the "elopement capital of the East Coast." This lasted for decades, until Las Vegas eventually replaced Elkton as the top elopement spot.
