History of Windermere
The Timucua Indians called Windermere home until the 1500s, when the Spanish started settling in the area. For centuries after, Spanish settlers made up most of the residents in the Windermere area, until the United States purchased the eastern half of the state in 1821. After Florida officially became a state in 1845, the United States government offered a land incentive for settlers to move to the area: Anyone willing to build a home and cultivate at least five acres would be given 160 acres of land. Due to this, more settlers made their way to Windermere, and with settlers came railroads, steamboats, and tourism. The town was officially founded in 1887 and then incorporated as a town in 1925. Since then, the town has grown to have more than 3,000 residents and has retained its history by keeping many of its homes and roads preserved.
