History of Baltimore, MD

Baltimore has a rich history that is intertwined with the history of the United States as a whole. It was initially inhabited by Native American tribes as early as the 10th millennium B.C.E., but Europeans arriving in the 1600s found few people here. Colonists settled the area throughout the 1600s, but it wasn't until 1729 that the town of Baltimore would be founded. Baltimore played a large role in the American Revolution when the Second Continental Congress fled Philadelphia to hold their sessions in Baltimore for a period of three months in 1776 and 1777. The city continued to grow and expand during the 19th century. During the Civil War, the city was divided on who to support, which led to the first bloodshed of the war, the Baltimore Riot of 1861, in which four soldiers and 12 civilians were killed. After the war, black migrants flocked to Baltimore, creating the largest population of African Americans in any northern city. This led to the economic growth of the city that continued through World War I and World War II, when Baltimore was a major war production center.
